The world’s most popular hybrid car since 1999, the Prius was obviously a model that would make the cut for 2017. Toyota decided to spread the hybrid love to other segments – including MPVs. Named Prius+, this hybrid MPV promises low taxes and low CO2 emissions, quiet environment and good mileage.
How much of this is actually true?
Let’s break it down into pieces and find out. Interior design – enough headroom but squeezes your legs First and second seat rows not only feel spacious, but actually offer enough room for legs and heads, even for people of above average height. There are plenty of pockets, trays and a split glovebox compartment to store stuff. Although 3rd row seat access is facilitated by the wide rear door, you need to squeeze your legs in. As with most MPVs, the 3rd row of seats drastically reduces boot space.
The dashboard looks tricky for the conservative driver. The instrument cluster is attached on the middle of the dashboard, and not behind the wheel. On the plus side, there is a heads-up display that is incredibly practical and intuitive. Sadly, dashboard materials feel and look cheap.
Driving experience – great city companion
Let it be clear:
Toyota Prius+ is a hybrid MPV designed to give its best on busy city streets. The ride is smooth and silent thanks to the quiet electric motor. The 1.8-liter diesel engine cuts in a lot but does it smoothly every time. Bumps are absorbed decently by the suspension. Highway speeds are not really a pleasant environment for the Prius+. There, the CVT tends to keep the engine revving more than it should, generating a considerable amount of noise. The extra tire rumble and wind noise doesn’t help either.
Is Toyota Prius+ fun to drive? No. As a matter of fact, if you are an adrenaline junkie, you are most likely to hate it. It rolls a lot on corners and the acceleration is sluggish. However, this MVP is designed for good mileage and space, not for dynamics. However, Prius+ does a great job in its natural, inner city environment. It eats little fuel, runs smooth and ensures high reliability.
