2018 Hyundai Ionic Hybrid

    Drive with Class

First of all, Toyota definitely deserves a praise for the inspired name. Ioniq makes it sound like “iconic” but also streaming a hint to ions – thus electricity. While it definitely looks like a promising Toyota Prius rival, there is still room for improvement. Let’s walk around and see what the hybrid Ioniq is all about.

    Performance and drivetrain

Just like the Kia Niro, whose platform is sharing, the Ioniq Hybrid places an electric motor besides a 1.6 liter GDI petrol unit with an Atkinson cycle. Indeed, the Atkinson cycle trades performance for efficiency. Although it uses 40% more thermal energy, Hyundai Ioniq isn’t really the car to take on a race. Together, the petrol and electric units provide 139 hp and 195lb ft of torque. On the plus side, the buyer is provided with an 83.1 mpg combined fuel economy. The carbon output is reduced as well, rated at a mere 79g /km.

Power is sent to the wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It’s less efficient than a CVT but on the other hand makes driving more enjoyable and reduces engine noise. The plug-in hybrid Ioniq features a Sport mode. Once activated, the entire instrument cluster in a rev counter and stiffens up the steering. Don’t expect it to turn into a beast, though.

Although the name may sound like something taken from the latest Sci-Fi movie involving spaceships, the inside of Ioniq is plain and simple. The center console boasts a few blue accents which contrast with a not so familiar shade of beige and brown plastic elements. Some shockwaves are felt through the structure of the car when paired with its optional 17” wheels. However, on the smaller, standard size ones the ride comfort is decent, without any expectations of absolute damping or noise cancelling.

The plug-in hybrid Hyundai Ioniq may bring together the best out of the two worlds; the tranquility of electric motors combined with a slight push from an internal combustion engine. It promises to be great for long distance travel and not to hurt your pocket, nether when buying nor when filling up the tank.
